Emma's Findings

My Uncle wore shoes that had pieces of metal put into the leather by the toes and heels to make your shoes last longer. They were called segs. Every town had at least one cobbler or shoemaker. When he was in his teen years they had a sort of shirt called a dry shirt they were generally white. Cotton and wool mixes were used on clothes because man made fibres were only just coming into being. The only type of hat my uncle ever wore was dark green and navy blue school cap. Instead of having a mall they had all different shops for all different things. More about shoes i found out that nothing was popular then saddle shoes. They were black and white and looked like a sneaker. Another fashion was the ballet slipper. It was the popular choice and was often worn with cutie white socks. By Emma.s

10.PSP
11.Car racing
12.X-BOX
If we didnt have these activities life would be really boring.
My favourites from entertainment today are Computer and TV.
I enjoy these activities because most other activities need a Computer or a TV to play them.
There are lots of things to do with a computer and a TV.
If you miss a show on TV you can watch it on the Computer.
On a regular day, if there were no such thing as all these activities, I would be eating and sleeping all day.

After interviewing my mum i found out a lot about fashion even about her fashion life and how she found it. First of all i found out that the fashion back then was not so different there are changes though like the leather jackets only bad boys would wear them but as my mum put them they were called teddy boys and that my auntie used to date one and is now married to one. I also found out that no girl wears frilled skirts like they did back in the days and you don't see much people wearing twin sets. My mum wore her first halter neck dress that was especially made for her she wore it to her first formal and said it was lovely to dance in. My mum went to shops in Dunedin called butter Fields and D.I.C and small department stores. The D.I.C used to be on the block that night 'n' day in the octagon is. In Dunedin when my mum was grown up the most expensive shop back then was Arther Barnett's if you wanted more expensive clothes. My mums sister was a dress maker so they didn't have to worry about buying to many clothes. Many there is differences to fashion but fashion is the same as other fashions though the days but fashion will carry on being dresses and jeans and skirts. By Jenna

My big question was how did cooking change over time:

I found some extra facts in the interview here they are: in the 1940s-1950s rice was a pudding they used a coal range to cook food they didnt have fridges or stoves/ovens

I would rather live now because: we have lots of options we have power for lots of things we have more food and liqards we have more jobs
we dont have to fight for our lives

HOW HAS FARMS CHANGED THE WE ARE NOW

When my Nana owned her farm with my granddad she said that farming has changed a lot.
She said that the tool have changed. The tools have got more technical because trucks and digger have now got gps in them and computer that make them go. There are way different tools back then compared
to now. They had one two wheeler motor bikes and they didn't have trucks to cart their things around on and no post divers and they made hay not silage. they killed their cattle and sheep and sometimes a pig. My Nana did milk but for their own milk and didn't milk so early in the morning. If something broke down they would take it to the local garage or if it was something big a mechanic would come from town and fix it or you would take it into town. Nana didn't need to use clippers to shear the sheep, they used electric shearing machine.
There were no big farms like now they were only about 300/400 acers. There were dairy farms and sheep farmsbut more sheep farms than now. There were were farms on hills but my nanas one was on flat ground. People owned farms unlike now there are companies thatown the farms. The way safty was was back the n compared to now it way different. Motorbikes and tractors are different have safety cabs, just a rollnbar. If you wanted someone driving and someone throwing hay off the back of a truck

Caleb's findings

How has farming changed over 50 yrs
The advancement technology has changing farming dramatically.

Grandad had a ferret and they used to set 300 traps per day. He used labradors on occasions and he had a grey hound that would run down rabbits.

He had a Dave Brown case tractor with no cabs, no heating and no radio. Later he got a John Deer tractor5820 had insulated cab ,CD player and a radio and Central heating front loaders with forks and was much more powerful
.

Feeding
out sheep in the old days used a tractor and trailer or the Ute with Grandad driving and Grandma on the back feeding out the small rectangle bales.
There was a lot of manual labour. Grandad changed later on to round bales that he could lift on with his forks onto his hay feeder that automatically feeds out while driving .

He had a silage waggon which he could load on with his front forks end loader and then it would automatically feeds out . BOTH these methods are faster and more efficient and use less physical labour.

Cars
Petrol was cheaper back then rather then now.her Morris Oxford and Nissan Bluebird were the most comfortable and biggest. Her Nissan Bluebird was the most economical because it had two fuel LPG and petrol. Cars are much cheaper now than then because of the Japanese imports.
Trains & Trams
They are a good source of transport for people in the city but not for those in the country. They used coal until diesel came in but they both polluted. They stopped being transport because of aircraft's ,cars and buses. trams and trains stated up at the beginning of the century. for 2 sections it cost 3p and for a concession ticket it cost 2s 6p
Boats
Ferries started working at the beginning of the century. They took people from Europe to New Zealand when people wanted to go.Her bad part about leaving Scotland was leaving the family. The good part was looking forward to more opportunities and both work wise.
Planes and helicopters
Helicopters could only hold the pilot. When she first came to New Zealand they had food, drink and toilets. Plane tickets are cheaper now than then.
Public transport For her public transport she used trolley bus , tramcar and a cable car. It was very cheap public transport. Around in her day there was trolley bus, train, boats and aeroplane, when grandma came to New Zealand.
In world war II they used fighter planes, tanks, armor trucks, jet planes and armored ships that made the World War II easier.
In answer to the big question
There is now more public transport available takes less time to travel around the world and flights are cheaper

schools!!!

Schools: Nowadays schools have radiators , central heating and in hotter country's air conditioning. Schools in the 1940's-1960's only had fires in there rooms for heating and each child had to bring a sod of turf for the fires. The rooms were so small that if to classes were in one classroom only one class could sit down at a time. Teachers and pupils: I'm sure you all know some stories about teaches back then used to cane children , clout children and even kick them.Well it's true! Some people from that time still have tracks of the cane on various parts of their bodies. If there were nuns in the class or school the too would cane the children.School life: The families back then generally didn't have much money so from around November children children went to school bare footed . some of the teachers gave a prize of a half crown [about 15cm nowadays] for the first boy to turn up barefooted. The children were from 14-16 years old when left they school which had around 7 classes.

How did migration affect your life?

My nana's life was effected by migration a lot because she would not have moved around and learnt so much about NZ if it was not for all the migrants that worked with her father.
this also meant
her family could get enough money to live
.

What impact has technology had on your life?

My grandad's name is Nigel Pitts. He is 69 years old. He was born in Dunedin
When my grandad was a child he didn't have any electrical appliances to build something out of wood. e.g. electric drill, chainsaw. And when his mother would bake something she would use an open coal stove. He didn't get a phone until he was 10 or 11. This was also when he got his first car. He and his family would go for rides at say 9:30 and go for a ticky tour just for the novelty of going for a ride when he first got it.

My grandad was very lucky he has lived through a time period and so he has seen a great change of technology over the years. When he was a young adult he was a surveyer and still now he is a surveyer so he has seen a big change in what technology he could use to measure length much easier now to read the distance now compared to back when he was a young adult. It is mucheasier now thanit was back then.

My opinion is that grandad is very lucky and i would love to be him. Some of the many reasons that i would like to be him as i said before he has been alive over a great time period. Because imagine if when you were a kid there wasn't very much technology and so you grew up technology became better and there was more of it and by now he is surrounded by all of this great technology like new phones GPS's and more. He can think back to when he was a kid and think about how it has changed. It must be amazing. He told me about there are tings mow that can pinpoint you on the Earth's surface. He told me that they can mark you and and be only up to 2 centermetres away and that is where you are standing. They can also pinpoint your height up to 3 inches off at the same time.

HOW HAS SCHOOLS CHANGED OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS AND HOW HAS IT IMPACTED ON YOUR LIFE?

my grandmother went to school in about the 1950s.Itwas very different to what it is now. When theymaths they measured in pounds ,inchs, yards instead of centermetres, tones and kilometers
they didnt do much fitness and they didnt do any cross countries but they did do sports for example netball, soccer, rugby and many more.

Some of the subjects at school are tech, writing nature study, maths and social studies. When they did tech the girls did cooking and fabrics and the boys would do wood work and metal work but now they get to do everything.when it was writing time the teacher would write something on the board and they would have to copy it into there books to see if they were neat enough.

School started at 9am and went onto 3pm, normally grandma would bike take the tram walk or take the trolley bus.

Some of the games that they used to play are marbles ,spinning tops, tag, rounders (its like tea-ball but with your hands) and 5s.

As you can see, school has changed because the world has learnt more,

In the change of entertainment overtime how has it affected you?

1940's Childhood toys-summary

In the 1940's, most toys were made from wood and tin, unlike how now most toys are made of
plastic, which was only introduced into toys in the 40's.
Most children only got new toys or games on their birthday or Christmas, and if otherwise it was a rare treat, or special occasion. But now kids get new toys all the time, and if anyone was wanting to go to town to shop in the weekend back then, you couldn't, because all of the shops would be closed.
My grandma told me that when she was a child, she got a girl's comic, every week. A popular toy for girls to play with in the 40's were paper dolls. Most girls would cut out a person to be their doll and then make clothes to fit.
I have learnt that toys in the 40's were a lot simpler than toys today.

How has school changed over the past 50 years?

50 years ago they used pens that you dip into ink but now we just use pens with ink in them or pencils.

Back then you got to have milk at school and it was for free but now they don't even sell milk at school and you get no food at school for free.

They used to have black boards with chalk but now we have white boards with whiteboard markers and smart boards.

Back then they had the cane to discipline kids with when they were naughty but now they are not allowed to hurt kids with anything.

50 years ago the schools were very strict but now they are not as strict.

They did not have to pay for school but now we do.

Back then if you were naughty sometimes you would have to write 100 lines "I should not be naughty" after school but now you just get yelled at.

Boys went to woodwork for manual and girls went to cooking. Today both girls and boys learn cooking and woodwork.

50 years ago all sewing was done by hand but now we have sewing machines.
